THE COLLAPSE
OF AMERICA'S MANUFACTURING JOBS
In the 1980’s
General Motors was the largest manufacturing corporation in the world and GM's Flint Truck & Bus complex was the
worlds largest truck assembly. This massive complex can produce over 700 trucks every twenty-four hours and GM has invested
around $2 billion in it since 2008. The UAW represented over 6000 workers at this facility in the late 1980's
, the local union leaders belonged to the Future Directions political caucus and Mike Westfall was the caucus chairman.
AUTOMATION, FOREIGN SOURCING, DOWNSIZING, CORPORATE RESTRUCTURING
No industry exemplifies the negative societal impact of drastic employment
restructuring more than the auto industry. While this story has and continues to be played out across our nation in various
cities and assorted industries, no city has paid a greater cost than Flint, Michigan. General Motors was founded in Flint
in 1908. The UAW was also founded out of necessity in Flint in 1937. By 1977 Flint had the worlds largest concentration of
GM autoworkers with over 80,000. GM, with little regard for social costs, sliced Flint’s auto jobs 90% to a meager 8000
workers by 2010. Because of this Flint’s population dropped 50%. Flint went from a population of 200,000 to
around 100,000 and it's tax base, schools, police, fire protection and other municipal services were overwhelmed as its
crime rates went through the roof.
FLINT’S GRASS ROOTS ASSEMBLY LINE ACTIVISTS
Forty years ago, from 1976-1991, before corporate restructuring strategies devastated
middle-class American jobs, the Westfall blue-collar militant activists in Flint Michigan were at the lonely forefront
sounding thunderous alarms. These activists who worked on the assembly lines stood alone and their work and voices spread
to other grassroots groups around the nation. They were futurists who foretold the future carnage about to be visited upon
manufacturing. All of their insightful predictions have come to pass.
The vast employment transformation these insider activists confronted head-on has since impacted
all America from border to border. Young people, working families, retirees and vast portions of America’s middle-class
have all been forced to accept a reduced standard of living as jobs, wages, benefits and pensions were slashed by this purposeful
redistribution of wealth.
To maintain
autonomy the Westfall groups worked as independently as possible away from the International UAW and Westfall refused to accept
union staff jobs that were offered to him. He was critical of several UAW positions and policies, which he publicized in the
media. Consequently the establishment downplayed and attempted to erase the work of these historic blue-collar activists.
This site and the rest of the huge
archived work stand as a permanent historic testament to the labor of those blue-collar rebel / Flint autoworker activists.
